No need for private, group lessons will get you what you need to get started. If you are going for first time, I recommend lessons. The only smile I saw all day was from the guys in the kitchen when I took our large Pizza back and asked them to cut it into slices. 2 staff by outdoor tables openly complaining about wages, workers, etc. This year the majority of staff seemed angry or upset, from the ticket window to the concessions, to the instructors. This is our second trip to Hidden Valley. Would recommend for a day trip and those who don't have the time or money to go to ski mountains. It's a great place to learn to ski as the terrain is easy with many lift options. Don't let that deter you, just ask anyone, many of the locals were very helpful and friendly guiding us. If you are a first timer, might be a bit confusing on the process of how you get rental equipment. Many people left theirs in rental building and on top of the lockers. Lockers for boots/shoes/bags are available, a little confusing where to rent them, so we walked back to car & left them there. They don't allow food to be brought into their lodge (expect a cafeteria more than a lodge).

Outdoor seating with bonfire pit, indoor fire place with racks to dry mitts/hats, basic snack type food, bar for simple adult beverages, TV's playing sports games, small pro shop, free parking. If you don't go expecting a ski resort/mountain, which it is not, you'll be pleasantly surprised for a little ski hill. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful.
